INTERVIEWS
Collected on this page is an enormous
amount of links to interviews dealing with the
development of the Legend of Zelda games. Links to
transcript of the website the interview originated from
are given where available, while some of the interviews
listed on this page were typed from magazine or TV
sources unavailble on the web. The reason for collecting
and listing interviews on this site is to amass a large
collection of information on the Legend of Zelda, not to
demean the value of the original source. If there should
be any reason for concern, please contact me and I
will remove anything without hesitation.

This Japanese website, run by Shigesato
Itoi, the creator of Mother/Earthbound, seems to
do many interviews for video games, having a
large section of interviews for Nintendo games, and the interview discussions are
several pages long.
Unfortunately, this is a Japanese site so all of
the interviews are in Japanese. In order to
somewhat decipher the text, use babelfish. If anyone out there that can read and
translate Japanese and would want to take the
time to translate the Zelda interviews, I would
be very thankful.

Ocarina
of Time interview
http://www.1101.com/nintendo/nin1/index.htm
The very unique thing about this interview for
OoT is, that it is actually several pages of
comments from the Zelda team for OoT! The very
depth of having comments from other staff of a
Zelda game speak is something that is not seen
very often. From what I made out with babelfish,
the script director and character designer both
seem to be explaining that Ocarina of Time is
indeed the backstory to A Link to the Past which
includes the Imprisoning War. This interview
feature is one I would very much love to see
translated someday. A translation of a few
comments can be read here. |

What if you
walk along and everything that you see is more
than what you see - the person in the T-shirt and
slacks is a warrior, the space that appears empty
is a secret door to an alternate world? What if,
on a crowded street, you look up and see
something appear that should not, given what we
know, be there? You either shake your head and
dismiss it or you accept that there is much more
to the world than we think. Perhaps it really is
a doorway to another place. If you choose to go
inside you might find many unexpected things.
...
The first game in the series was made about 15,
16 years ago. It takes place in a fantasy world.
It is the story of a small kid around the age of
ten going on an adventure fighting enemies. I
really wanted to make a series where players
themselves are going on an adventure using their
heads, and using the controller to control the
characters body.
...
If Zelda Gaiden turns out to be fun to play, from
now on we'll see new entries into the Zelda
series with shorter time intervals in between.
And, I'll probably have less direct involvement
in the games. I've been saying all along that I
have a lot of confidence in my teams, and I think
they will make some good games.
...
...with Ocarina of Time it all
depends on the players will and how far he
wants to go. This is a game that will take a
while, and when you do beat it, you'll be saying
Ha! So I didnt just waste life!

When creating a sequel to an
original, I like to look first and foremost about
what was good and bad with the original. However,
when creating a game, I like to make sure it's a
complete story within itself, so it doesn't
require a sequel and there's no explanation
needed - that is how I approach all my projects.
...
Zelda is, of course, a game designed by
Miyamoto-san, and he definitely has his own
taste. I feel a responsibility to stay true to
the basics of the game, but also I try to add my
own flavor. In the process of developing a game,
there are numerous times when I come to a
sticking point and don't know what to do -- in
times like that, I lean on Miyamoto-san. Also,
when I implement something in the game that the
creative team doesn't like, I say, "Oh, but
Miyamoto-san wants this in there..."
...
We made a game [The Wind Waker] that will not
disappoint those who are waiting with all their
hearts. We believe that as long as we ourselves
feel the game is fun during the development, it
should not disappoint fans.- Eiji Aonuma
