HAPPY 20TH! THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
FAMICOM DISK SYSTEM (JAPAN) FEB 21, 1986

The Adventure of Hyrule

So here I am wondering what I should do with this Zelda fansite that I've been neglecting to work on lately. Instead of leaving up an index page and site with a noticeable lack of updates since the last date posted, I've decided to put up this page to acknowledge that I think its time I put The Adventure of Hyrule on hold for now. Being busy in my life, and my main interest concerning video games in general, it would make me feel better not to have to think about needing to work on this site right now. The only change to the site is this page, the rest of the site can still be accessed by the links here. Maybe I will work on The Adventure of Hyrule in my free time and make it a better site to return, or maybe I will contribute to other Zelda fansites? Lot's of new Zelda games coming out in the near future, and the series looks as good as ever.

"Then, with a magical sword in his left hand and a magical shield in his right, he set off alone on his long travels."

Mak - June 1, 2004

The files on the site were lost were erased on the server and I'd have to reupload everything, so what was remaining of this site is no longer up. I've put this index page back up for explaination sake. I'm looking more forward to The Minish Cap and its Jan 2005 release as more information is released. Fans of the most underappreciated Zelda game will be happy to hear a sweet melody. Nintendo makes a good wallpaper for once

"Even after 18 years, the legend of Zelda never stops changing. We are now taking you to a world where Link has grown up, a world where he will act different and look different. In order to grow, Link must not stand still, and neither can I."

With the March 18th release of Four Swords + in Japan, and E3 that will unveil The Wind Waker 2 nearing, there's lots of Zelda news going on.

The first chapter of a Four Swords + manga by Akira Himekawa illustrating the introduction to the game, has been posted on NCL's FS+ website. Two TV ads were also added to the site.

Four Swords + import impressions
1up.com first impressions
1up.com 3 geniune impressions
1up.com Shadow Battle footage
IGN Single player impressions
IGN 4player impressions
IGN screens and movies
Gamespot impressions
NTSC-UK first play impressions
Miyamoto Shrine impressions
Planet Gamecube impressions

For North American release, Four Swords + has been renamed to "Four Swords Adventures". This title is somewhat appropriate as Navi Trackers has been dropped from the NA release, most likely due to the amount of localization and voice sampling required that would delay the other two parts of FS+ from being released. NOA has announced a release date of June 7th for FSA.

Can't wait until June 7th for Zelda multiplayer goodness and want to try out Navi Trackers? Four Swords + can be imported from these stores: eStarland, VGD, liksang, and Play-Asia. You can also find the GBA Famicom Mini version of The Legend of Zelda at most of those stores.

edit Legend of Zelda for GBA is coming to North America!

At this year's Game Developer Conference, Eiji Aonuma gave a speech on the evolution of Zelda. He talked about his involvement with the series, how it's changed, what exactly the "Miyamoto test" was, and how it stresses "reality over realism". Planet Gamecube has a full audio mp3 transcript of the speech, as translated by Bill Trinen. 1up.com has a summary of the speech, while IGN Cube has posted a full transcript. As I mentioned in my blog entry, I was about halfway done with my own transcript from PGC's audio when IGN beat me to it:) I'll finish it anways and post it within a week. Aonuma's speech was very insightful to the way Zelda is made, and just how much thought they put into making the games with something so simple as the way a bomb shop owner greets a child or the timing a sound effect to alert the player to finding a secret. A definite read for anyone who is a Zelda fan.

Acompaning Aonuma's speech was the news that he is new the producer of everything Zelda, while Miyamoto will still have the role of "ultimate" producer and have the final say in things. The Wind Waker 2 is expected to be shown off at this year's E3.

Ending this Zelda news update, I'd like to mention that I've set up a blog for my so-called "Gamer's Adventure" game site, where I talk about my interests in gaming.

3-16-2004

I mentioned in a previous update about the NESkimos appearing on MTV's Ultimate Video Game Countdown to talk about Zelda. I've finally taken the time, along with my new download speed, to listen to their music, and it is quite good. Although during some parts they get a little crazy, they do the Zelda themes, and other game themes, very well. I especially liked the 'get the Triforce' theme at the end of their dungeon theme performance :) All of their music can be downloaded from SoundClick, although you do need to register a free account.

While browsing the NESkimos' forum, I came across a post about a band called Select Start, which I would describe as a band that plays game music in a more traditional manner. (I'm not too good with knowledge on music terms heh). I think most bands that play game music are usually rock/metal, so its different to see a band use instruments like violins, flutes, and pianos to play game music. If you look through their site, you can find an excellent rendition of The Wind Waker's title theme, and the site FanPlay hosts a Legend of Zelda title theme.

Interviews-update-time! Some new interviews have been added to the long list. All of the new interviews I've added to the list are distinguishable from the rest. Among them are quotes from the Icons' special, Gameheadz, a Zelda excerpt from Miyamoto's Game Dev Conference speech, and a link to a recent translation of the N.O.M. Four Swords + interview by N-Sider.com.

An actual Master Sword has been forged to fight the forces of evil!

Two new commercials have been added to NCL's Four Swords + website.

Indie Zelda posted a new short comic titled "Only Half". Kinda a dark take on Zelda's characters, I swear Zelda is being evil!

Following up on beating A Link to the Past without any sword upgrades on the GBA, and discovering Ganon has to be hit with the Whirling Blade Technique, I wasn't sure if this was also in the original SNES version. Well I've played the SNES version and it is. Now I'm playing through A Link to the Past on my GB Player again just for the heck of it. Playing the SNES version again and comparing it to the GBA one, I'm reminded of a few things: the slowdown the original had when lots of sprites and large bosses were around; the slower map transitions; better sound quality in the SNES version; Link not having a voice and only making a sound when jumping from high ground, making me think a Wallmaster or some enemy is coming down; the good 'ole ice dungeon puzzle; and the original translation of the script, although good for its time, seems a little thin now. The darn Helmasaur King gives me trouble every time though, I'll so totally destroy him one day...

3-1-2004
Let's hope the server outage troubles are over... ;)

I came across a couple of Zelda music videos a few of days ago. One is an Ocarina of Time music video by Six Sided Video with clips changing to the music of Escaflowne. The second is a Wind Waker music video by 8bm Studios with the song "Wonder Boy" by Tenacious D, which makes it all the more humorous given who wonder boy is in the video. SSV's Smash Bros. video is also worth checking out.

NCL's Four Sword + website has gone up, and with it a great trailer for the game. The latest issue of N.O.M. covers FS+ and has an interview with the staff. From what I could make out with Babelfish, it appears that FS+ is being made by members of the staff that made A Link to the Past for the SNES, which goes along with using A Link to the Past graphics as a base for FS+. Anyone out there intersted in translating interviews? :)

The Legend of Zelda is now available for the GBA in Japan. To import it, you'll have to turn to eBay or Lik-Sang.

In a recent interview with Denis Dyack of Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: TTS), when asked about a dream remake, he replied "I'd love to do a realistic, mature take on Zelda... Ahh, I shouldn't talk about this."

Contratulations to Indie Zelda for completing their Legend of Zelda comic. Over at Zelda Headquarters, the skillful TSA has put up his entire speed run through Ocarina of Time.

Finally, to add to this site, I've uploaded a video of the final battle with Ganon using no Master Sword or defense upgrades in the GBA version. I had never gone through A Link to the Past like this before, and I was surprised to find that you cannot strike Ganon unless you use the Spin Attack if the Master Sword isn't upgraded. Was it always like this on the SNES?

A Link to the Past final battle with Ganon, no upgrades.

2-18-2004
I'd like to try to keep this site updated about every 2 weeks or so... at least monthly anyways.

I'm debating about the rest of the Wind Waker screens, and whether or not I should play the end all over again to get new screens. The problem I have is that the screens I took are kinda too dark, and I know I can get better ones now that I've played with the settings on Dscaler since I took those screens.

I haven't gotten much done on this site since the last update, so I'll offer a few humorous Link's Awakening movies. (Windows Media Player 9 required)

Link beats a chicken senseless
Link sets a dog aflame
Luigi's cameo

Here I go! Wahoo!
I wish I had a flying rooster...

2-3-2004
Bunch of screenshots update.
The first batch of many Wind Waker screens for the final battles are up, starting with the cinema scene that leads to the
Puppet Ganon battle.
Added about 30 screens of the path leading from Hyrule Castle to Ganon's Tower, basically
"Hyrule".
And for Ocarina of Time, several screens of
Hyrule Field and Lake Hylia.
Putting up these screens is a bit of a laborous process. After actually taking the screens and gathering them into one place, I see that they don't quite look as bright and vibrant as I'd like them to be. So I end up trying to make the screens look better by adjusting the Gamma and Contrast so they at least look brighter, and I can see more stuff in the picture on my monitor. Just hope it doesn't have the reverse effect and look too bright on someone else's monitor. After the adjustments, I then crop the screen to cut out the black bars from the screen grab. Finally, I save 3 versions of the screen: a bitmap to keep an original, a jpeg at about 75-80% quality for the web, and a small thumbnail. Then of course there's the matter of setting up the thumbs and links on and oldfashioned html page.

I suppose a warning might be in order for some of the Wind Waker screens, but then again, it's been out for almost a year in the U.S., so if you haven't, why haven't you beaten The Wind Waker yet? ;)

1-19-2004
The World of Captain N is here!

I spent some time taking several screens from the episode of Captain N, Having a Ball. This one is about Princess Lana throwing a ball at the palace, and Link and Zelda are invited. Meanwhile King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard steal the Triforce, which causes a negative effect on Zelda because of her bond with the Triforce, and Hyrule starts to fall apart. There's also a small video clip from the episode on the last page. Wouldn't it be great if the entire series of Captain N were released on DVD, instead of an episode here, and an episode there as with the Zelda cartoon DVDs? ... Wouldn't it be great if Captain N actually got a DVD release? Wouldn't it be great if I could find one of those Zelda cartoon DVDs in a store? If you want Captain N, the only solution is eBay I guess.

Get a little bit crazy, crazy!

1-15-2004

I've added a few Marin trophy pics to the Smash Bros. section. I think I'll work on getting some more Smash Bros. character screens. If anyone is looking for something in particular let me know.

More avatars have been added over the last month or so. You can never have enough Zelda forum avatars!!

In recent news, The Legend of Zelda, among other games like my fav Super Mario Bros., will be rereleased on a GBA cartridge in a new line of Famicom GBA rereleases.

1-2-2004
It's about time to check in to this site with the new year now here, long enough to pry me away from my new PS2 and FFX.

MTV, along with EGM magazine, just aired their "Ultimate Videogame Countdown", and The Legend of Zelda series was voted as number 1 by players out of the 15. The topic the segment focused on was the music of the original Zelda and the music of the band, the NESkimos, and their enthusiasm for the game. I imagine MTV will run the hour long show again, so check the TV schedule over the next week for another airing. In general, its was way, way, way, way, way, better than Spike TV's poor game awards show. Check MTV.com's schedule for airings.

12-21-2003
My Zelda Collectors Edition Disc arived on Friday! I played through The Adventure of Link, again, since then.

I've put back up the Maps and Strategies foldout that came packaged with The Legend of Zelda, in its corresponding section.

The Zelda Alliance is developing and now has a chatroom up, where you can come to talk to other Zelda fans about... Zelda and stuff.

12-15-2003
Added final battle with Ganon screens to the ALttP GBA ending pages.

12-14-2003
Triforce Chamber and Ending sequence screens from the GBA version of A Link to the Past have been put up.

Last night I finally finished the "second" quest in the Wind Waker, including obtaining all of the figurines. I got worried when the final figure did not appear, and thought I had missed something (!),but realized I had to leave the gallery and then reenter. Upon beating the game last night, I encountered the first freeze up I had with this game, right as Link and Tetra surface on the water and Komali floats near them, the picture freezes and the game keeps making a buzzing noise. Kinda annoyed because I wanted to see and hear the credits again, so I beat the final boss again this morning.

12-12-2003
I created nifty 'banners' or 'buttons' for links to the game pages that are up now. The reason I don't have every Zelda game listed yet is because I'm concentrating on those five currently. I don't have much intention to put up a Oracle game section soon, but there will be Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask pages eventually. Better to focus on getting content for a few games than to spread resources thin, the sections are already bare enough heh.

"Throwback" sections have been placed in the AoL, OoT, and TWW sections, of what little I've developed so far at least. The throwback pages contain throwbacks and references to previous Zelda games, and maybe any other interesting info I can think of.

2: a reappearance of an earlier characteristic

I've also added a link to the interview section, of a interview by NTSC-uk with Miyamoto and Aonuma about The Wind Waker

My anxious wait continues!

I've also found Nintendo has kept a record of all my orders, I've been subscribing to NP since 1992.

I've moved most of my site to my new host at Zelda Legends, and the site URL is now www.adventureofhyrule.com. Since I have no real web design skills or layouts in mind, this site will probably be somewhat messy at times. With the image on the right, I'm working on making the index page a little more presentable at least.

10-21-2003
Updates to The Adventure of Hyrule will be on hold until
late November while life is busy, and to give time to work
on the site and projects.

10-11-2003

A ton of screens were taken of Super Smash Bros. Melee and put on the screen page. I could have chose a few Zelda screens, but every pic of princess Zelda is precious!

9-28-2003

To show that I am still working on this site and to give an update, since its nice to see a website updated, I've been working on little things little by little and putting them up as I go. Here's some stuff I've put up:

- Ocarina of Time section is now up: manual story, Hyrule Field screens, early story
- ALttP GBA intro
- The Wind Waker section is now up: game intro, Run from pig screens, credits, returning music list
- Old article I wrote on the series' timeline
- Zelda 2 Parapa Palace video

I just bought a great new video capture card this weekend, a Pinnacle PCTV Pro. Much better than my old ATI TV Wonder VE, and it deinterlaces and has S-Video, making for great screens at 640x480!

Link in Soul Calibur 2 is cool. I'm going to have to buy this game sometime after my rental is up.

9-1-2003

The Wallpaper section now has all the images back up without dead links.

I've been getting lots of screens lately of Captain N. There are more screens from Potion of Power now, a large page on Once Upon a Time Machine, and a small page for Having a Ball. Check out the Captain N section.

I'm debating about just using my blog to update this portion of the website. I posted about some Zelda related Soul Calibur II stuff recently, and a defense of the Japanese style art present in Zelda.

8-17-2003

After being on Racknine for a week, I've been going through several pages and sections and setting them up to look a lot nicer, at least, nicer than before since I have no real skillz, so I just do whatever! Also in just a week I've used up 144MB of Bandwidth out of 1GB, yikes, I hope the 1GB is enough for now, or I'll have to shut down as it gets closer to avoid extra charges, at least at this point. Clever little scheme eh, give 75MB storage but only 1GB bandwidth to use that 75MB for the basic package, well, it worked. I'm on to you Racknine!

Zethar-II has translated some stuff about the intro to The Wind Waker from the Zelda Box that you can read here.

Oh she's so beautiful...

8-10-2003

As much as I liked all the junk that was filling, and scrolling up the main page, its starting to feel too messy, and a 100kb "nice" looking image kinda hurts the load time and maybe bandwidth. While I'd like my site to look and feel more fun than a restricting hard layout, it needs to look a little more cleaned up and organized, clean is fun too sometimes! Kinda like my room. That and I have no web design skills, so meh. The "layout" needs to be a bit more compact, I'll probably be doing the rest of the pages, making the site more readable and easier to navigate.

8-9-2003

No new content up, but the news today is that I bought hosting by www.racknine.net (everybodies doing it!) and moved the site. As you might have noticed, the new url is http://advofhyrule.racknine.net. I've also been wanting to work on some sort of general gaming site, that will branch of this site, plus Angelfire's free service has finally become too limiting, and its about time I got my own host. A page for my tentatively named game site is up here.

7-27-2003

I've been tweaking the Story FAQ lately, trying to get in as much relevant little bits of info on the subjects, and make it readable enough, although I think its starting to look a little messy now. I spent some time scanning pictures of all of my Zelda games and adding them to each section. The links section has been slowly worked on, gathering links to the Zelda sites and other fansites.

A week ago I got a Game Boy Player for my Gamecube, mainly to play A Link to the Past GBA on my vacation at the time without needing to lug my NES with me. Right now I'm on Link's Awakening, the original GB version using black and white color scheme, the first time I've really played it in about 5+ years.

... ... ...

In the July issue of Game Informer, Ron Hollow reported a interview with Eiji Aonuma and quoted

"what do you think of the fact that many Zelda fans would be happy playing it in 2D forever?

answer: "There's definitely a difference between 2D and 3D graphics, but after making Wind Waker, Im questioning whther it was too difficult. With the 2D graphics, it's not easy, but it's a different kind of problem solving. I'm always questioning myself after a project is over, and with Wind Waker 2, I might return to some of the basics that made Zelda what it is. There are a few other qualities I'm reconsidering but that's not definite yet. I hope you're patient and look forward to next E3, when it'll be announced. There should be a playable version on the floor next year."

Also, a E3 interview with Eiji Aonuma was recently posted by Gamespy.

7-18-2003

A Japanese website called Ki no ue no Himitsu kichi that does many extensive interviews for video games has done several Zelda interviews. More information in the interview section.

2 very important quotes from the Script director and Character designer of Ocarina of Time were translated by the Hero of Translations, Zethar-II. Yes, Ocarina of Time is actually the backstory and Imprisoning War told of in A Link to the Past, yes, the Zelda games are a series and do connect, yes, the towns are named after the Sages, and yes, Ganon is modeled after Christopher Lambert. Read the translated comments here.

edit: Though no one will see this, yes, I've been under the impression since Ocarina of Time was first previewed that the game was about the backstory to A Link to the Past. The point is the staff of the game actually say this.

6-20-2003

A few interviews were added, one by the GIA with Dan Owsen, EGM's afterthoughts with Miyamoto and Aonuma on TWW, and a NP/Famimanga 64 interview with Miyamoto on N64.

Only you can prevent art theft. For the story, check out this topic and History of Hyrule's front page.
History of Hyrule: " ... there is a Zelda site out there that is stealing Zelda artwork from American and Japanese artists and claiming it as their own. The site is www.tloz.tk and I would like you all to be very wary of them. There is no reason to spam or harass them, but let me assure you, there is ample proof that they are not the Japanese artists they claim to be, and I'm pretty sure absolutely none of the fan art they say is their's actually is. Because of things like this I would like to urge all of you artists and writers out there to make sure you protect yourself and your peers by looking out for these kinds of hoaxes."

It seems Tetra's Trackers is a remake of a old Super Famicom BS-X game.

6-15-2003

A links page has been put up.

5-31-2003

I've been working on the Interviews section, and added a few interviews, Superplay, Spaceworld '99, and Miyamoto Shows of Zelda 64.

I also finished The Legend page for The Wind Waker.

5-4-2003

Me so tired. I feel like I should update this site with something though.

I added some sound clips to the Captain N page.

I started FAQ on the story of the Zelda series here.
I love showing off all the different Links.

Zelda Headquarters, a site I help out at, put up there own forums that I post on.

4-18-2003

The Wind Waker is one of the best games ever made, and one of the best Zelda games ever made.

I put up screenshots of The Legend of Zelda of Level 1. The Maps and Strategies scans were re-put back up.

Run from the Pig screens of The Wind Waker. I put up most of The Legend from The Wind Waker, just need to do the first part with the picture of Hyrule still.

I think I put up some more Ocarina of Time screenshots of Kakariko burning, not sure, I need to sort it all out, it's getting quite messy.

Spirited Away is a very good movie. The documentary of how it was made is very interesting too. The one guy does practically everything on creation, so the movie is truely his vision. It's a lot of work to make such a great animated film with a deadline.

I cannot stop listening to "Boom Bip - Roads must roll" that uses a sound clip from track 13 of Hyrule Symphony, namely of the Zelda 2 intro.

There was a video game special on TLC last Wednesday called Gameheadz about how games started, up to the NES. Great feature on Miyamoto, Nintendo, and Mario and Zelda. :D
:D

I added a Captain N page with screens from the episode "Quest for the Potion of Power. Man, I miss Captain N the Game Master... I wish Cartoon Network would aquire the Nintendo cartoons so I can watch them all once more, and tape them to watch them again and again... Guess I'm feeling nostalgic when thinking of that cartoon, boy did I love that show as a kid. I have but a few episodes left taped from when I was younger, and the 4 episodes that had Link and Zelda that I got on CDs along with the Zelda cartoons, so I'm lucky I have that.
The world of Captain N is here!

3-21-2003
I put up the A Link to the Past screenshot page along with 80 screenshots from the first part of the game, rescuing Zelda from Hyrule Castle.

I also put up a Wind Waker screenshot page with screens from the Wind Waker movie on the Zelda OoT Bonus disc.

I've also added a few more screens to the Ocarina of Time page.

It seems my ATI TV Wonder VE is a good enough card after all. It gives good results and records in Mpeg-2 (very good movie format for quality and compression) for the $50 price tag. Taking stills with Dscaler got some good results. I think I can get better screens from recorded Mpeg-2 movies if I record at 4Mb/sec - 6Mb/sec instead of the 2Mb/sec I was using to save space. A 2min movie will be about 40MB instead of 20MB but oh well. I'll just burn the movies I don't need anymore to CDs when I need the space back.

Check out Extended Play's feature on Zelda. Link's name comes from the player's "link" with the game!

3-15-2003
I added 125+ screenshots to the Ocarina of Time section! I would have had about 15 more screenshots of the Volvagia battle but the screenshot program that was temporarily holding the screens I was grabbing decided to crash... #*(@!

I also added 66+ screenshots of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link section.

Only about 1 more week until The Wind Waker comes out!!

3-8-2003
Really spruced up some more sections, The Legend of Zelda, and The Adventure of Link. After seeing how the Master Sword wallpaper I had would look for the background of the A Link to the Past section, I thought it'd be neat to try and do that for the rest, and I think I will, and have.

The The Legend of Zelda 1 story pages were edited a bit, the A Link to the Past Nintendo Player's Guide summary has been put up for Zelda 1, and Hints of how to Destroy Ganon has been put back up nicer.

Played Rinku No Bouken a few couple of days ago. 300 screenshots taken up to Parapa Palace :D

3-6-2003
Spruced up the A Link to the Past section.

Goddamn bandwidth, 94MB yesterday or something. Taking down the wmas background music, curse you and your bandwidth limitations, internet!

ZHQ relaunched today headed by The Silent Assassin.

Dear update page, I made a update page today. Here it is. Right here. As I type this its 12:50am, and I can't help but wonder if I should be sleeping now.

Added Gampro's uncut version of The Wind Waker conference interview to the interview section.

Got a video capture card a while back. Screenshots are cool. Hey, it's Link from the Wind Waker movie on the bonus disc!

Update 12:55 AM: I'm going to sleep soon, man am I tired.
